Hike for Hunger Is On Again! The NSW Rovers & Wesley Mission Hike for Hunger is on again in 2007! Hike for Hunger is the annual service project of NSW Rovers. Now in its sixth year as a state event, it involves hundreds of Rovers from across NSW collecting non-perishable food items through donations at supermarkets and shopping centres, as well as from family, friends and colleagues.
Every year, thousands of people rely on the Wesley Mission for enough food to feed their families. This need is often at its highest during the Christmas period when some families struggle to provide just one present for their children. In the past 5 years NSW Rovers have collected over 30,000 items of food for Wesley Mission to distribute amongst Sydney's disadvantaged. This year, we hope to collect 10,000 across the state! Last year, with plenty of help from right throughout the Region, South Metropolitan Rovers collected almost 3,000 items of non perishable food for the Wesley Mission Hike for Hunger! With Rovers from several other Regions adding their collections to the total, NSW Rovers delivered over 5,000 items of food to Wesley Mission, to help less fortunate people in Sydney. Over the last 5 years South Met Rovers have delivered almost 15,000 cans of food and other non perishable items to Wesley Mission through the annual Hike for Hunger. This year the challenge is on again, and we hope to collect more than ever before. But we need your help!!!
How can you help? Here are some easy ideas….. · Start a collection box with your Mob, Pack, Troop, Unit, Crew, Group etc · Have a collection night and ask everyone to bring in a can of food · If you filled one box last year, try to fill two this year · Check in your pantry for any cans of food you bought for a special recipe and had forgotten about, or anything you stocked up on but no longer need · Start your own box and ask friends, family and workmates if they have anything they can contribute · If you see us out and about collecting at a supermarket, please leave something with us if you can · If you work for a company that could help us in any way, please let me know Any form of non perishable food is acceptable, and these can include... Canned fruit, canned vegetables, canned or packaged soup, long life milk, canned spaghetti or baked beans, packaged spaghetti and pasta, canned meats and fish, canned puddings and desserts, tea, coffee, milo, cordial, juice, pasta sauce, jam and other spreads, baby food, and so on. Any packaged food with a life of more than 12 months, that does not need to be refrigerated, is also acceptable.
Personal hygiene products are also useful, such as... Toothpaste and toothbrushes, soap, baby wipes etc Please find attached some further information about this event, as well as a poster to put on collection boxes.
With your help, we can make this year our most successful collection ever! If you have any questions, or would like me to come and pick up a box from you, please give me a call on 0410 487 293 or email me at Katherine.McGuigan@det.nsw.edu.au
Thankyou for your support!
